DANIEL van Tonder and Christiaan Burke have taken the lead after Friday’s second round of the Fortress Invitational which is being played at Glendower Golf Club in South Africa.

The duo hold a slender one-shot advantage over five golfers tied for third place. They sit on nine-under-par 135 with 36 holes still to play.

Kyle Barker, Tyrone Ryan, Jonathan Broomhead, Rhys Enoch and Deon Germishuys are all tied for third on eight-under-par 136. Van Tonder began the second day as part of a four-way tie for third, one stroke behind overnight leaders Benjamin Follet-Smith and Benjamin van Wyk, who had both opened with seven-under-par 65s. Van Tonder followed up his opening 66 with a three-under-par 69, which featured six birdies and three bogeys. He picked up birdies on holes one, four, six, 10, 11 and 13 while dropping shots on five, 12 and 14. Burke, meanwhile, made significant gains on the leaderboard after opening with a 68 that left him tied for 12th following round one. He then followed it up with a five-under-par 67, dropping just a single shot. He recorded six birdies, including three consecutive ones on holes four, five and six, before adding further birdies on 13, 15 and 17. Burke’s only bogey came on the 18th but he had done enough to claim a share of the lead. The overnight leaders from round one, van Wyk and Follet-Smith, are now tied for 11th on six-under-par 138 after both carded identical one-over-par 73s.

Heading into the weekend, players will have an opportunity to win R100 000 if they make a hole-in-one on the 12th hole during the third and fourth rounds, courtesy of CIB South Africa.
