LUIS Carrera shot a brilliant second round 66 to take a slim one shot lead at the summit of the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open leader-board at Royal Harare Golf Club. Carrera, from Mexico, produced one of the best rounds on the day with a brilliant six-under which took him to an overall 11-under-par-133 after 36 holes of golf. He had carded five-under-67 in the opening round on Thursday.

His brilliant second round consisted of five birdies and an eagle on the par-five third hole while also shooting just a single bogey to jump to the top of the leaderboard.

With Carrera setting the pace at the top, in second place there is MJ Viljoen on 10-under-par-134 while Hennie Otto – who was the overnight leader on round one – Martin Rohwer and Austin Bautista are tied for third place on seven-under-par-137. Rohwer had the best round on the day shooting a breath-taking seven-under-par-65 having shot level-par in the first round. His magical round was bogey-free, with seven birdies, four on the front nine and three on the back nine. Jean Hugo (-6) is in position six while Robson Chinhoi and Trevor Fisher Junior are tied for position seven on five-under-par-139 after round scores of 68 and 70 respectively. Completing the top leader-board after round two is a six-way tie for position nine between Ruan Conradie, Fredrik From, Warwick Purchase, Samuel Simpson, Simon du Plooy, and Doug McGuigan who are all on four-under-par-140. Meanwhile, seven Zimbabweans managed to make the cut. Leading the local contingent is Chinhoi with others who made the cut being Visitor Mapwanya, Ryan Cairns, Nyasha Muyambo, Shaahid Mahmed, Stuart Krog and Tonderai Masunga. With Chinhoi making 68, Mapwanya shot one-under-par-1 in the second round for an overall two-under-par-142 while Cairns and Muyambo finished their 36 holes on one-under-par-143 following identical second round scores of 73. Mahmed carded a second round 71 to finish on level-par-144 tied with Krog who played a brilliant 69 to level par having gone into the second round on four-over-par. Masunga carded a second round 70 for an overall one-over-par-145 enough to see him make the cut. Speaking after the day’s play Krog said he was happy with how he played on Friday and hopes that some of the Zimbabweans who made the cut will be able to climb up the leader-board over the weekend. “I had a good day today. Thursday, the first round of the season I was very rusty, it didn’t go my way. I really fought hard on the back nine to shoot three-over. I really had to play good golf, especially in the afternoon today, it gets really harder and a lot firmer. I had a good back nine, and I managed to get into the weekend and hopefully we can keep that momentum for the next two days. “Hopefully, similar to last year we can have a couple of guys near the back-end of the field on Saturday and Sunday and get the crowd going,” said Krog.

A total of 64 players made the cut, however, none of the 11 amateurs made it.
